DeSoto Police Fatally Shoot Armed Man After Threatening 911 Call

On December 13, 2024, at around 10:39 a.m., the DeSoto Police Department received a 911 hang-up call from a residence in the 1000 block of Hunter’s Creek Drive. Once contact was reestablished, 26-year-old Arthur Lee Armstrong, Jr., informed dispatchers that he was armed with multiple weapons and intended to harm police officers. A second caller confirmed Armstrong was at the residence with others and armed with a knife. DeSoto patrol officers quickly arrived at the scene, only to be confronted by Armstrong in the front yard, wielding a knife in each hand. Ignoring repeated commands to stop and drop his weapons, Armstrong aggressively advanced towards the officers. As he closed the distance, one officer fired a single round from a patrol rifle, hitting Armstrong in the chest. Officers then disarmed him and administered life-saving measures before DeSoto EMS transported him to Central Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The DeSoto Police Department has requested an independent investigation by the Grand Prairie Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity Unit has sent an investigator for an independent review. As per department policy, the officer who fired the weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave while these investigations are conducted. The DeSoto Police Department acknowledges the significant impact this incident has on the community and those involved. They are committed to a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.

A press conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the DeSoto Police Department headquarters, where community members and media are encouraged to attend for updates on the investigation. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and underscores the importance of transparency and community involvement in such critical matters. Further updates will be provided as more details emerge, ensuring the public remains informed throughout the investigation process.

Our sincere condolences go out to the families affected by this tragic event. The DeSoto Police Department remains dedicated to uncovering the truth and maintaining public trust during this challenging time.
