Deadly Crash on KY-30 West: Local Resident Jordan Gross Killed

A tragic two-vehicle crash in Breathitt County on Tuesday morning, December 24, claimed the life of one driver and left another critically injured. The collision occurred at around 8:50 a.m. on KY-30 West in the Canoe community, prompting a rapid response from Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 13 troopers and medical personnel.

Preliminary investigations by authorities revealed that 27-year-old Jordan Gross, a resident of Canoe, was driving westbound when his vehicle encountered a patch of black ice. The hazardous road condition caused Gross to lose control of his vehicle, which then crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound vehicle. The impact was severe, resulting in Gross suffering fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Breathitt County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the second vehicle, whose identity has not been disclosed, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to the University of Kentucky hospital for emergency treatment. Their condition remains serious, and no further updates on their recovery have been provided at this time.

Authorities have noted that neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Toxicology reports are pending to determine whether any substances may have contributed to the accident. The ongoing investigation, led by KSP’s Trooper Branden Watts and Detective Brandon Thomas, aims to uncover all the factors involved in this tragic incident.

This collision highlights the inherent dangers associated with winter driving conditions, particularly the presence of black ice. This invisible hazard often forms on roadways during freezing temperatures, making it nearly impossible for drivers to detect. The accident serves as a stark reminder for all drivers to exercise extreme caution during the winter months.

The community of Breathitt County is grappling with the loss of Jordan Gross and the severe injuries sustained by the other driver. Local residents are reflecting on the importance of safety measures, such as wearing seat belts, which can potentially reduce the severity of injuries in such accidents. Additionally, this incident may prompt further discussions about winter driving preparedness and the importance of road safety awareness, especially in areas prone to black ice.

As the Kentucky State Police continue their investigation, they are urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward. The findings from this case will not only provide answers to the grieving families but also underscore the critical need for vigilance on the roads during winter weather.
