Elderly Couple Killed in Acushnet Christmas Day House Fire

ACUSHNET, Mass. - The tragic deaths of an elderly couple in a house fire on Christmas Day in Acushnet, Massachusetts, have been confirmed by local and state authorities. The victims have been identified as Leo Lyonnais, 89, and Annette Lyonnais, 87, according to a statement released on Thursday.

The fire occurred at their residence on Garfield Street in the early hours of December 25. Firefighters and police responded to the scene at approximately 1:50 a.m., where they were met with flames and smoke emanating from the two-and-a-half-story multifamily dwelling. Despite their efforts, the fire claimed the lives of the Lyonnais couple.

Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the fire. However, they noted the presence of a wood stove and a wall outlet with a multi-prong adapter in the area where the fire is believed to have started. While the definitive cause remains undetermined, officials have classified the fire as accidental and have indicated that it is not considered suspicious.

“On behalf of the Acushnet Fire Department, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Lyonnais family,” stated Acushnet Fire Chief Thomas Farland, expressing the department's sympathy for the grieving family.

Another occupant of the building managed to escape the blaze after being alerted by a neighbor who knocked on his door. Three individuals were transported to the hospital for evaluation, while a firefighter who was injured during the response is currently under observation and is expected to make a full recovery.

The fire has displaced six families, who are now receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter and essential support to those affected by this devastating event.

The Acushnet Fire Marshal’s Office, in collaboration with the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, is conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the details surrounding the fire. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Leo and Annette Lyonnais, a couple whose lives were tragically cut short on what should have been a joyous holiday.

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of house fires and the importance of fire safety measures. Authorities are likely to review and potentially enhance fire safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As the investigation progresses, updates will be provided to the public, and efforts will be made to support the affected families. The memory of Leo and Annette Lyonnais will be honored as the community comes together to offer condolences and assistance to those in need.
