Elderly Lancaster Man Found Deceased Near Home After Week-Long Search

In Lancaster County, South Carolina, the search for 82-year-old Ronald Todd Estiridge, who was reported missing earlier this month, concluded tragically with the discovery of his body in a wooded area near his home. On Tuesday, January 14, a neighbor returning from work stumbled upon the remains just before 5:00 p.m., located in an elevated part of the woods adjacent to Cannery Road in the Buford Community.

Estiridge had last been seen on the evening of January 7 around 9:00 p.m., when he reportedly left his residence on foot. His family, concerned by his unexpected absence, reported him missing shortly after. The community and law enforcement had been on high alert, hoping for his safe return.

Upon the neighbor's discovery, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office was quick to respond, deploying crime scene investigators, the county coroner, and additional support from the Spartanburg County Search and Rescue team, which brought in K-9 units to assist. The body was found not far from Estiridge’s home, suggesting he might not have ventured far before meeting his unfortunate end.

While initial assessments at the scene found no immediate signs of foul play, the exact cause and manner of Estiridge's death have yet to be determined. An autopsy has been scheduled to provide further clarity on this matter. Sheriff Barry Faile, in a statement, shared his sorrow over the outcome of the search efforts, emphasizing the closure this brings to the family despite the sadness of the situation. "Although this didn’t end like we all hoped it would, at least the family will not have to live with the uncertainty of where Mr. Estiridge is," Faile stated, also expressing gratitude towards the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement and search and rescue teams.

The investigation remains open, with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office actively seeking any additional information from the public that could shed light on the events leading to Estiridge’s death. They have provided a contact number for anyone who might have details or leads that could be beneficial to the case.

Lancaster, the county seat, is a small city with a population of approximately 8,526 as per the 2010 U.S. Census, part of the broader Charlotte Metropolitan Area. Known for its historical ties, the city was named after the House of Lancaster, reflecting its British heritage. This incident has touched the heart of this close-knit community, where such events are rare but deeply felt.

The discovery of Estiridge’s body not only brings a somber end to the search but also raises questions about the safety and vulnerability of elderly individuals in similar situations. It prompts a reflection on community vigilance and the support systems available for those who might wander or face health-related issues that could lead to such outcomes. As the investigation continues, the community of Lancaster mourns the loss of one of its own, rallying around the Estiridge family with support and sympathy.
