Elderly Moped Rider Dies After Month-Long Battle Following Hit-and-Run in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In a somber update to a tragic incident, an 82-year-old man named Dashrathlal Barot succumbed to injuries a month after he was involved in a hit-and-run while riding his moped in northeast Charlotte. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department disclosed this unfortunate news on Monday, January 13, detailing that Barot passed away on January 6.

The accident took place on the evening of December 1, at approximately 8:25 p.m., at the intersection of University City Boulevard and North Graham Street, a busy junction in Charlotte's University City area. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found Barot lying on the road, critically injured. He was immediately transported to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, where he fought for his life for over a month before his death was confirmed.

According to the investigation, Barot was operating his moped in the travel lane when a black sedan struck him and then fled the scene without stopping to render aid or identify itself. This lack of responsibility from the driver has left the community searching for answers and justice. The police noted that Barot was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which likely exacerbated his injuries.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has been actively investigating this case, piecing together evidence from the scene, including the remnants of Barot's moped. They are appealing to the public for any information that might lead to identifying the driver of the sedan. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses or witnesses from that evening could be crucial in piecing together the events leading up to the collision.

This incident has reignited discussions on road safety, particularly concerning vulnerable road users like moped and bicycle riders. Advocates for road safety have pointed out the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better infrastructure to protect those on two wheels. The absence of a helmet in this case has also brought attention to the importance of personal protective equipment, which could potentially mitigate the severity of injuries in such accidents.

The community has responded with an outpouring of sympathy for Barot’s family, highlighting his life and the void his passing leaves. Local residents have expressed frustration over the hit-and-run, calling for more awareness and accountability on the roads. Community leaders and local officials are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the moral and civic duty to assist in bringing closure to this case.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and the vehicle involved remains unidentified. The police continue their plea for public assistance, hoping that community cooperation will lead to the apprehension of the responsible party. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the critical need for vigilance and compassion on our roads.
