Skilled rider, sudden merge, tragic end on I-65

In a quiet stretch of Sunday morning on northbound Interstate 65 in Mobile, Ala., what started as an ordinary ride ended in heartbreak for one veteran motorcyclist. At about 8:50 a.m., officers from the Mobile Police Department responded to reports of a collision between exits for Airport Boulevard and Dauphin Street. They arrived to find 71-year-old rider Paul Wike lying injured and unresponsive on his motorcycle. Despite first responders’ best efforts, Wike was pronounced dead at the nearby hospital shortly afterward.

Investigators say the crash began when a vehicle attempted to merge onto I-65 from Airport Boulevard. The driver lost control during the merge, prompting Wike—who was already riding on the highway—to brake abruptly in an effort to avoid a collision. That sudden manoeuvre caused him to lose control of his motorcycle, which slid out from under him. Importantly, police confirmed that the motorcycle and the merging vehicle never made physical contact; instead, the sequence of events unfolded as a rapid reaction chain in traffic.

Road and weather conditions at the time were clear and unsurprising, not believed to have contributed to the incident. While the merging driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully, no formal charges or citations have been issued yet. The investigation is still active, with police reviewing witness statements and traffic-camera footage to determine exactly how Wike’s evasive action turned fatal.

In the hours after the crash, that section of I-65 was temporarily shut down by authorities so first responders could work safely and investigators could collect evidence. Traffic was diverted around the scene as crews documented skid marks, vehicle positioning and road conditions. Witnesses described a calm Sunday morning turned tragic in seconds. Wike’s family has been notified and the department extended its condolences, noting that he was known locally as an experienced rider who loved the open road and the sense of freedom it brought.

The tragedy has renewed appeals from motorcycle-safety advocates, who encouraged both riders and motorists to maintain heightened attention in merging situations. They emphasize the importance of maintaining safe following distances, anticipating sudden changes, and giving space when vehicles are entering highways. Even skilled riders like Wike remain vulnerable when traffic shifts unexpectedly around them.

Friends described Wike as the kind of rider who knew his machine and the highway—and yet, sometimes, the unexpected cannot be avoided. It’s a reminder that even on a clear morning, with good conditions, split-second decisions can carry grave consequences. As Mobile’s community mourns the loss of a seasoned rider, the call to stay alert on the roads is louder

 than ever.
