An Unexpected Target: 77-Year-Old John Drake's Fatal Siege Inside the Wallace Sheriff's Office

Friday afternoon in the historic mining town of Wallace, Idaho. For about 90 minutes, 77-year-old John Drake moved calmly through the public areas of the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office. He lingered in the lobby, visited the jail area, and spent time in the courtroom. Then, gunfire shattered the calm, sending everyone inside scrambling for cover and leaving bullet scars throughout the building.

The siege ended with Drake fatally shot by police in the lobby. But the most chilling and indiscriminate violence had already spilled outside. According to law enforcement, Drake allegedly fired through the windshield of a vehicle in the parking lot. The shots struck two women bystanders—one in the front seat and one in the back—in their legs. A family member had to drive them to the hospital themselves as Drake reportedly continued firing at their fleeing car.

In the aftermath, a community is left grappling with a profound sense of confusion. Shoshone County Sheriff William Eddy revealed that Drake was generally supportive of police and had little prior contact with them. His wife, Clare Drake, told investigators she had no idea he had left their home or intended to do anything violent. Authorities do not believe he was targeting anyone specific inside the building, admitting his motive may never be fully understood.

The human cost, while not fatal beyond the suspect, was real. The two wounded women were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A Kellogg police officer, stationed in the dispatch center which shares a window with the lobby, was struck in the ear by flying glass and also taken to the hospital. The sudden violence turned a public government building into a shelter-in-place nightmare before a multi-agency police response neutralized the threat by 5 p.m.

Sheriff Eddy confirmed the sad final act played out inside. Drake was in the lobby when officers fatally shot him. Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris confirmed Drake died at the scene, ending the hours-long ordeal that began with the first active shooter call at 2:40 p.m.

The investigation now stretches across jurisdictions, with agencies from surrounding counties assisting. While officials stress there is no ongoing threat, they’ve asked the public to avoid downtown Wallace as detectives piece together those 90 mysterious minutes. Even a nearby Interstate 90 off-ramp was closed during the intense response.

For now, the tight-knit community is left with more questions than answers. How does a 77-year-old man with a reportedly positive view of law enforcement end up in a fatal shootout inside its very heart? The probe continues, with the hope that clarity, if not sense, can be found.
