Heart-Wrenching Shooting at Royston Tobacco and Vape in Franklin County Leaves Teen Injured; Suspect Identified

An ordinary Monday evening in Franklin Springs, Georgia turned frightening when an 18-year-old walked into Royston Tobacco and Vape inside Tri County Plaza and was struck by gunfire. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says the victim was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, leaving friends, family and neighbors shaken and searching for answers.

Deputies first got the call shortly after 8 p.m., when the quiet shopping center became the scene of chaos. Police and emergency crews, including officers from the City of Franklin Springs and the Royston Police Department, converged on the plaza, where startled bystanders huddled behind cars and storefronts. Within minutes, the wounded teen was on his way to medical care, his condition described as stable but grave.

By nightfall, authorities announced they had taken 21-year-old Suhail Mohamed of Hartwell into custody. He is facing a charge of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting. The sheriff’s office said the arrest followed a methodical investigation that included witness interviews and evidence gathered at the scene.

Friends of the victim described him as a quiet young man who liked to hang out with his buddies after school and enjoy a snack or drink at the vape shop. For those who knew him, Monday’s violence seemed unthinkable — a stark departure from the routine rhythms of their small town.

Officials have not released a motive for the shooting, and detectives continue to piece together what provoked the violent act. No arrests beyond Mohamed have been confirmed, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The plaza, normally filled with families doing errands or grabbing dinner, was cordoned off for hours as officers canvassed the area. Shoppers and store owners spoke of the surreal scene: yellow tape fluttering in the evening breeze, footsteps echoing on empty sidewalks, and the distant sirens fading into night.

As the community reels from the shooting, parents and local leaders are calling for calm and support for the injured teen and his loved ones. In a town where everyone seems to know a neighbor, the wound left by Monday’s violence runs deep, a reminder of how sudden and fragile life can be.
