Auburn, AL** – Auburn University is mourning the loss of its beloved longtime football chaplain, Chette Williams, who tragically died on Sunday night after falling into Lake Martin. Williams, 61, was attempting to leave his pontoon boat when he fell into the water near a dock at Kowaliga’s Restaurant, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
The incident occurred just west of the Kowaliga Bridge in Elmore County around 5:45 p.m. Despite his friend's attempts to save him, Williams' body was pulled from the water at approximately 7:19 p.m. and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin reported that Williams had traveled by boat with a neighbor for dinner at the popular restaurant in Alexander City. Upon discovering the restaurant was closed for a private event, they decided to return to their boat. Tragically, as Williams attempted to step onto the boat, he fell into the water between the vessel and the dock.
Williams' contributions to Auburn extend beyond his role as football chaplain. He served as the Auburn campus director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the State Director for Urban Ministries. A former Auburn linebacker, Williams played from 1982 to 1984, during which time Auburn won the Sugar Bowl, Citrus Bowl, and Liberty Bowl. He transitioned to ministry after being licensed in 1987 and ordained in 1988, serving in Spartanburg, S.C., and as a pastor in New Orleans and Mobile.
Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in Adult Education from Auburn in 1985 and a master’s of divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1993. He is survived by his two daughters, Lauren and Caitlyn, and his son, Chette Jr., who was tragically killed in an Atlanta shootout in 2019.
Named Auburn’s football chaplain in 1999 under then-coach Tommy Tuberville, Williams was known for his deep spiritual guidance and support to the players. He also authored "The Broken Road," which chronicled an 11-player mission trip to the Dominican Republic before Auburn’s 2010 BCS National Championship run.
The Auburn community is deeply affected by this loss, with tributes pouring in for a man who touched countless lives through his dedication, faith, and compassion. As authorities continue to investigate the exact circumstances of this tragic accident, Williams' legacy of service and faith remains deeply cherished.
