ST. LUCIE COUNTY: Man Asleep on Couch Killed in Workplace Dispute Turned Deadly

In the quiet hours of Monday morning in St. Lucie County, Florida, a sudden burst of violence shattered a home and a family’s peace. Twenty-nine-year-old Mario Jose Romero Alonzo was asleep on a couch when gunfire erupted and took his life. What should have been an ordinary moment became a tragic ending that stunned neighbors and loved ones.

Authorities say the shooting did not target Alonzo. A 17-year-old teenager, recently fired from a construction job where Alonzo’s brother also worked, came to the residence intent on confronting that brother over a workplace dispute. Anger and frustration from the job ignited a decision that would change lives forever.

When the teen could not find the brother he came to see, investigators reported he instead approached the house and entered. Inside, Alonzo was resting. He was not involved in the disagreement and had nothing to do with the conflict. Law enforcement officials described him as an innocent bystander caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro said the suspect acted out of a desire to “settle a score.” The violence, he explained, was neither random nor spontaneous but fueled by unresolved tension. Still, the loss of Alonzo has left a family grieving, struggling with the senselessness of how an ordinary night took a devastating turn.

The suspect now faces serious charges, including homicide and tampering with evidence. The case also widened when authorities arrested the teenager’s 20-year-old cousin, accusing him of trying to hide the suspect in his vehicle and flee toward Miami. Both are now in custody as the investigation continues.

Law enforcement officials are also examining the teenager’s immigration status as part of their work to piece together what led up to the fatal shooting. For now, the community mourns a life cut short — a man who went to sleep like any other night and never woke to see morning.
